SMALL GROUPS, 2006 - 2007

Ottawa Mennonite Church

We worship in large groups and we enjoy friendship in one-to-one interaction, but it's also important to experience Christian fellowship in a small group context. Some of you experience this through ongoing programmes of the church; for example:

• Young Adult Koinonia (YAK), a group for university-aged people
• Children's Choirs, such as the Intermediate Choir, the Junior Choir, and the Cherubs
• The Senior Choir, which meets weekly, not just to sing, but for fellowship and food!
• Youth Gatherings of various sorts, such as Junior Fellowship (for Grades 4 to 8) and God, The Universe and Everything Bible studies (Grades 7 to 12) as well as social and service activities for high school students.

Each fall the Ministerial Committee supplements these activities with a variety of other groups known as "Small Groups" which meet from October through June. If you have an questions about them, please call Ghenette H or Joy T, the Small Group Coordinators.

Small Group Options

•  1. Board Games Small Group, led by Sheridan H.
  • Long ago, before Nintendo came along, people used to play games around a table instead of a television. The board games small group wants to take you back to those simpler times. Our goal is to meet once a month for an afternoon of games and socializing in the Fellowship hall.

•  2. Bible Study, led by Don F.
  • This group will study a selected biblical book, and will meet until December.

•  3. Christian Life Small Group, led by Joan B.
  • The group will meet on a biweekly basis to discuss ideas and questions about faith and beliefs. The group will choose a book as a study guide.

•  4. Interfaith Meeting, led by Holly and Ryan K.
  • An experiential interfaith group would be formed by approaching a mosque and a temple/synagogue (or perhaps through existing congregational connections). Once formed, this group would meet together once a month for a potluck meal and discussion of as aspect of the life of faith as practiced in their tradition. i.e.: prayer, community, worship.

•  5. Ethnic Foods Group led by Ghenette H.
  • This group will visit a different ethnic restaurant each month, providing opportunities to sample the food of other cultures in the company of friends. Be ready to suggest a restaurant you would like to visit.

•  6. Reading Group led by Monica S.
  • This group meets once a month to discuss a novel selected by the members.

•  7. Quilting Group, led by Helen T. & Ruth D.
  • This group meets at the church on Thursdays for quilting, fellowship, prayer and discussion. Both new and returning members are welcome.

•  8. Curling Group, led by John D.
  • This group will meet during the winter months.

•  9. Walking Group, led by Emily S.
  • This group will meet on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 for walking, coffee, and fellowship.

•  10. Playgroup, led by Holly K.
  • A group for parents with toddlers that meets every other Thursday at 10:00 a.m.

•  11. God, The Universe, and Everything, led by Emily S. & Jamie L.
  • A chance for young people in grades 7-12 to get together and discuss how the Bible relates to life as a Christian teenager today. Some of the topics we will cover deal with school, friends, parties, media and family.

•  12. Motorcycle Group, led by Wes T.
  • Motorcycle entusiasts join together for excursions.
